So
you've decided to learn the language of Budapest, and hope that someday you can
stand along a bridge crossing the Danube and have a conversation with whomever
is walking by? Or maybe you'd like to sit in a theater and understand the nuances
of the plot?
Could it be much simpler, that you have a friend here in the
United States who grew up near Lake
Balaton and you would just like to share a few words in her language?
Find books for the expert speaker and for the beginner. If you
are new to America, and are just beginning to learn English, you'll find a few
books to help you as well. Some, like the English-Hungarian
dictionaries, are useful to a speaker of either language.
Recommendation:
buy at least one product with tapes/CDs. Hungarian vowels take some getting used
to for English-speakers, and reading the pronunciations in a book isn't enough.
Try music, or visit a Hungarian church or restaurant in your area.
Not only will you enjoy the authentic culture, you'll hear words the way they
are actually said.
